legislative advocacy
What is legislative advocacy?
Legislative advocacy is the defense and promotion of the interests of an industry. For the Credit Union industry, it means our action to defend the industry against harmful or costly new laws and regulations. It also includes the promotion of positive legislation that would improve and/or benefit our industry and the members we serve.
why is it important?
As our state trade association, the Michigan Credit Union League & Affiliates (MCUL) advocates on our behalf with state and federal lawmakers in Lansing and Washington, D.C., respectively. MCUL representatives frequently work in cooperation with industry volunteers to review proposed legislation, identifying our official position, and advocating for or against the proposals as necessary. The MCUL provides opportunities for credit union management, staff and volunteers to interact with lawmakers and regulators, both in events throughout Michigan and in Washington D.C. These events are extremely important as they give legislative leaders access to industry decision makers, further strengthening the MCUL’s voice as these issues are discussed and considered. The legislative and regulatory proposals engaged by the MCUL have a direct impact on the operations and environment in which Michigan credit unions operate.
How does Michigan community credit union participate?
Michigan Community Credit Union is a member of the MCUL. As such, our credit union is invited to participate in local chapter events as well as state-wide legislative conferences and events. Michigan Community Credit Union consistently participates in various advocacy activities on our members’ behalf. At the Federal level, Michigan Community Credit Union sends representatives to Washington D.C. for the industry’s annual Credit Union National Association’s Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC), as well as the MCUL’s annual Hike the Hill fly-in, where Michigan Community Credit Union representatives meet directly with our U.S. Representatives and Senators to discuss federal legislative issues affecting our institution and most importantly, our members. At the State Level, Michigan Community Credit Union attends the MCUL’s annual Governmental Affairs Conference in Lansing and bi-yearly chapter legislative breakfasts where our management and staff have the opportunity to sit down with local lawmakers to discuss state legislative proposals and the impact they have on our credit union and membership. Additionally, the MCUL sets annual political action committee (PAC) fundraising goals for each credit union, of which we achieve or surpass 100% of our annual goal. These funds are raised from Michigan Community Credit Union management, staff, volunteers and members and directly support state and federal legislative candidates that understand the CU difference. Michigan Community Credit Union understands the importance of supporting credit union friendly candidates. The MCUL’s support of these candidates is non-partisan and entirely based on their support of credit unions.
