emv cards

Michigan Community Credit Union will be upgrading its credit and debit cards to inlcude chip technology, also known as EMV (Europay, MasterCard®, Visa®). Chip cards offer enhanced fraud protection via a small square chip inserted into the front of the card, which provides you with the latest security features available. We will begin issuing EMV to members June of 2016.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chip-enhanced card?
Michigan Community Credit Union's new chip-enhanced (or chip card) card contains an embedded microchip. This chip holds information that is encrypted, making it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. Rather than swiping your card, you will insert your chip card into a chip-enabled terminal to complete a transaction. In addition to the embedded microchip, your new card still has a magnetic stripe on the back, and you will be able to make purchases by swiping your card at merchants who have not yet switched to chip-enabled terminals.

Are chip-enhanced cards new?
Although chip cards are relatively new in the U.S., they have been used in other countries for many years. In some countries, particularly in Europe, chip-enhanced cards are the standard.

Why will my card be replaced with a chip-enhanced card?
Replacing your card with a new chip-enhanced card is one way we can help simplify your purchase experience as technology continues to change, as well as increase your account protection.

What will the new cards look like?
Please note that your new cards will look different than your current cards.

What are security benefits of my new chip-enhanced card?
Your new card comes with advanced security due to the chip technology that makes it difficult for a fraudster to counterfeit your card.

What type of MCCU cards will have the chip?
Beginning June 2016, MCCU will re-issue MCCU MasterCard® Credit and Debit Cards, as well as MCCU Business MasterCard® Credit and Debit Cards. Michigan Community Credit Union will not be issuing chip-enhanced ATM cards.

Where will I be able to use the chip card?
You will be able to use the card at any retailer that accepts MasterCard. Continue to use the chip card as you did before for online and telephone payments. In addition to the embedded microchip, your new card still has a magnetic stripe on the back, and you will be able to make purchases by swiping your card at merchants who have not yet switched to chip-enabled terminals. If you are using your card at an ATM, you will still enter your PIN as you do now.

How will I know whether to swipe my card or insert it?
Your card will work either by swipe or insertion. The terminal or the cashier will prompt you to insert the card into the terminal if it's activated for chip technology. If the terminal is not yet chip-activated, you can swipe your card to complete the purchase.

Is Michigan Community Credit Union changing the features available on my credit or debit card?
No. In fact, MCCU is enhancing the security feature with the addition of the EMV chip for maximum protection.

Will I be able to use my EMV card when I travel outside the country?
For the most part, yes. The U.S. is the last major market still using the magnetic-stripe only card system. Many European countries moved to EMV technology years ago to combat high fraud rates.

Will my PIN and card number remain the same?
Yes, your card number and PIN will remain the same. However, your expiration date will change. You will need to update any automatic payments you have set up with your credit and/or debit cards with the new expiration date.

Will all merchants allow signature-based EMV transactions?
Some merchants will only allow PIN based EMV transactions, so be sure to remember your PIN number(s) for your credit and/or debit card(s).

When will I recieve my new card(s)?
Most credit and debit cards will be upgraded with chip technology at the time of the current cards' renewal date. If you would like to receive your EMV card(s) sooner, please contact us at 517.787.2060, or visit one of our four branches.
